10 Questions to Ask at Your Elementary School Parent-Teacher Conference

questions to ask at parent teacher conference elementary

Fall parent-teacher conferences are one of the best chances you’ll get all year to sit down one-on-one with your child’s teacher. The catch? They go by fast. Most conferences only last about 15 to 20 minutes, and if you walk in without a plan, it’s easy to leave with a vague “they’re doing fine” and not much else.

The good news is that a few well-chosen questions can turn a quick check-in into a real game plan for the rest of the school year. Below, we’ve put together the 10 questions we recommend every elementary school parent ask, grouped by topic so you can focus on what matters most for your child.

How Should You Prepare for a Parent-Teacher Conference?

A little prep goes a long way. Before your conference, try to:

  • Talk to your child. Ask what they like about school, what feels hard, and whether there’s anything they want you to share with their teacher. The Harvard Family Research Project’s tip sheet for parents lists this as one of the most important steps.
  • Review recent work and progress reports. Look through homework, tests, and any online grades so you can ask about specific assignments.
  • Write your questions down. Then rank them. Reading Rockets recommends asking your most important questions first, since time often runs out, especially when other families are waiting.
  • Know your report card. Many elementary schools, including LAUSD, send home progress reports three times a year using a 1 to 4 scale instead of letter grades. If those numbers feel confusing, read our guide to decoding the elementary report card before you go.

Questions to Ask at a Parent-Teacher Conference About Reading and Writing

Reading is the foundation for almost everything else your child does in school, so it deserves a big chunk of your conference time.

  1. What is my child’s current reading level, and how much growth have you seen so far this year?

This gives you a concrete starting point. Ask whether your child is reading below, at, or above grade level, and what that looks like in practice. If the teacher uses a specific assessment or reading level system, ask them to explain it.

  1. When my child reads, do they understand what they read, or mostly just sound out the words?

Some kids are great at reading words aloud but struggle to explain what a passage was about. This matters more and more starting around 3rd grade, when kids shift from learning to read to reading to learn. (We cover that shift in detail in our post on the 3rd grade reading shift.)

  1. How does my child’s writing compare to grade-level expectations? Can I see a sample?

Writing samples are one of the most useful things you can see at a conference. Look at spelling, sentence structure, and whether your child can organize their ideas. If writing is a struggle, our elementary writing tutors can help.

H2: Questions to Ask at a Parent-Teacher Conference About Math

  1. Which math skills is my child strong in, and which ones need more practice?

“Math” covers a lot of ground in elementary school, from place value to fractions to word problems. Asking for specifics helps you know exactly what to practice at home.

  1. Does my child know their math facts quickly and confidently?

Kids who still count on their fingers for basic addition, subtraction, or multiplication facts often hit a wall later with long division and fractions. If this is a gap, it’s one of the easiest things to fix early. Our elementary math tutoring program is built to close exactly these kinds of gaps.

Questions About Homework, Behavior, and Friendships

Academics aren’t the whole picture. How your child feels at school affects how well they learn.

  1. How long should homework take each night?

If homework takes your child a lot longer than the teacher expects, that’s important information for both of you. Share how long it actually takes at home and whether it seems too hard, too easy, or just right. For kids who need extra support, our homework help program can take the nightly battle off your plate.

  1. How does my child participate and focus in class?

Ask whether your child raises their hand, follows directions, and stays on task. A child who is quiet or distracted in class may be confused rather than uninterested.

  1. How does my child get along with classmates?

Friendships and social skills play a big role in whether kids enjoy school. Ask who your child spends time with and whether the teacher has noticed any conflicts.

H2: Questions About Next Steps

  1. What will my child be learning for the rest of the year?

Knowing what’s coming lets you watch for those skills in homework and get ahead of trouble spots. Waterford.org suggests asking about skills that haven’t been introduced yet, too.

  1. What can I do at home to help, and what’s the best way to stay in touch?

End every conference with a plan. Ask for one or two specific things you can do at home, and agree on how you and the teacher will check in (email, notes home, or a follow-up meeting).

Bonus tip: If the teacher uses a term you don’t know, like “fluency,” “benchmark,” or “intervention,” don’t be shy about asking what it means. Teachers want you to understand.

What If the Teacher Says Your Child Is Behind Grade Level?

Hearing that your child is struggling can knock the wind out of you. Take a breath. The fact that the teacher is telling you now, early in the year, is actually good news. It means there’s time to turn things around.

Instead of reacting right away, listen to the full picture and then dig into the details. Reading Rockets shares a helpful set of follow-up questions from the National Association of School Psychologists, including:

  • How long have you noticed this, and when does it tend to happen?
  • How different is my child’s work from others in the class?
  • Is this showing up in other subjects too?
  • What strategies seem to help at school?

From there, work with the teacher on an action plan that spells out what the school will do and what you can do at home, and set a date to check back in.

If your child attends an LAUSD school, you can also ask whether they qualify for classroom intervention or a Student Support and Progress Team (SSPT) meeting. Under LAUSD’s elementary grading policy, schools are expected to offer support before giving a student a 1 or 2 on the progress report. And if you suspect a learning disability, you have the right to request a special education evaluation in writing. Our post on IEP tutoring in Los Angeles walks through what that support can look like.

This is also a great time to get an outside perspective. A free academic assessment at Tutoring4Less pinpoints the exact skills your child is missing, so tutoring targets the real problem instead of just repeating classwork.

Quick Questions about Parent-Teacher Conferences

How long is an elementary parent-teacher conference?

Most are about 15 to 20 minutes. If you run out of time, it’s completely fine to ask for a follow-up meeting, phone call, or email.

Should I bring my child to the conference?

It depends on the school. Some teachers invite students to join, and some prefer to meet with parents alone. Check with the teacher ahead of time.

Can I request a conference outside of conference week?

Yes. You can ask for a meeting any time you have concerns. Most teachers welcome parents who reach out early.

What if English isn’t my first language?

Many schools can arrange an interpreter if you ask in advance. Reading Rockets also has tips written especially for families of English learners.

What should I do right after the conference?

Talk with your child about what went well, share one or two goals you and the teacher agreed

on, and follow through on the at-home plan.

Tutoring 4 Less Learning is the best investment I made this summer for kids. I shopped around many tutoring places and I was more than pleased with the services my children received here. Each of my children received an individualized tutoring plan that worked for them. Touching base with the tutors after each and every session was beyond helpful. Both my children blossomed and were ready for the next grade level. Their confidence and self esteem flourished and most of all I did not have to sign a contract that obligated or locked me into months of payments. Tutoring is based on need and goals and it is month to month. Tutoring was fun for them and they looked forward to it every time. Thank you for working with my children and allowing me to afford excellent services at an affordable price!

I enrolled my daughter in February 2023. I kept her in their program through summer. She was in the 2nd grade but struggling with reading and writing. With the extra help from Frank and his staff. She is now confident and reading at her grade level. I noticed improvement the first 3 months. She was awarded student of the month at her school and at tutoring 4 less. Education is an investment, it’s not cheap, and I am proud to have invested money on my daughters education. We are highly grateful to have met Frank, and his staff. We will definitely be returning back to him if we need to in the future.

Definitely would recommend Tutoring 4 less if your child is struggling! My daughter was below grade level since the pandemic so we decided to sign her up in January 2022. She was in 3rd grade and she was testing at a 1st grade level. In just a few months we noticed her improvement. We decided to continue through the summer program and we can now proudly say she is at 4th grade level. Thanks to everyone who helped her reach her goals.
